- Avoid shampoos and treatments that contain sodium laurel (or laureth) sulphate. This is an ingredient that you find in dish detergents and laundry tablets. It is used by manufacturers because it foams but it can be quite damaging to your hair. Instead keep your eyes open for products that contain decyl glucose (or glucoside) instead as they will be much more gentle on the hair.
- Treat your hair with a regular hot oil treatment, as this will provide your hair with some much needed deep conditioning. The warm oil will penetrate the shaft of the hair and will give it extra shine and flexibility. It can also help prevent the formation of split ends.
- Eat a healthy hair diet. Start taking vitamin and mineral complexes which will nourish both your hair and your body. Make sure that you include vitamins B, C and E into your regime.
- If your hair is curly try not to take a brush to it, use a wide toothed comb instead, or work through the length of your hair with your fingers. Brushes can be too harsh on curly hair, pulling it out of the scalp and snapping it along the shaft.
- When you are selecting hair care products look for ones that contain oils, both essential and vegetable as well as herbs. Several oils such as West Indian bay, ylang-ylang and rosemary have been shown to stimulate the growth of hair. If you have a problem with dandruff select products that contain tea tree or lavender oil as these are naturally antiseptic and will help against the dandruff. The vegetable oils such as corn, soy bean and safflower will aid in the miniaturisation of your hair and will be conditioning.
- Try not to go to bed with your hair still tied up, or with any hair accessories still in place as they can be pulled on through the night as you move and end up damaging the hair.
- Give yourself a scalp massage, it is not only relaxing it will stimulate the growth of your hair as the act of massaging works to increase the rate of blood flow to the area of the scalp, thus nourishing the hair roots and stimulating them to grow.
- To keep your hair looking good, treat yourself to regular trims at the hairdressers as this will reduce any split ends and keep your hair looking good.
