Best 6 Steps To Building A Healthy Family

We all want a healthy and happy family. The definition of family has changed over the years. You do not have to be related or joined by marriage to be a family member. If there is someone that you share a special bond with, they are your family. Family (in our opinion) is redefined as a group of people who care for each other, support each other, and are always there to help where they can. They are the people who mean the most to you. You can be related or related by marriage and not have that bond. Legally that is your family member, but that is where the likeness ends.

Caring is not all that is needed. A relationship can’t stand unless it is built on a healthy foundation. It takes work and dedication, and it is worth every ounce of effort.

How do you Ensure the Health of Your Family?

Ask this question to a dozen people and most likely you will get a dozen replies that include eating a healthy diet, exercising, and plenty of rest. Some may add seeing a doctor and dentist for regular check-ups.

These things are all true. But building a healthy family reaches far beyond the basics. These suggestions focus only on the physical issues we face. Let’s look at the picture through a wider lens.

Step 1.

  • Physical health – (as explained above)
    • Diet
      • Limit sugar and fat and be watchful for extra calories that come in the form of garnishes and sauces.
    • Exercise
      • Purposeful exercise such as walking, hiking, biking, and swimming. Strive to get at least an hour of exercise three times per week.
    • Rest
      • Use all-natural essential oils like lavender in tea, applied topically, or in a diffuser if you have problems getting into a deep sleep.
    • Annual check-ups from your doctor and dentist
      • Even if you believe yourself to be perfectly well, you need to have a check-up to catch an illness before it catches you.

Step 2.

  • Emotional health
    • Self-esteem, expression of love, acceptance of yourself, and believing in yourself are the stepping stones to emotional health. Loving yourself is an important step in being a contributing member of a family.

Step 3.

  • Spiritual health
    • There are many spiritual beliefs. They include (but are not limited to) the following:
      • God
      • Religion
      • Science
      • Reincarnation
      • Evolution

It is important to have a spiritual belief system for total wellness. This defines our purpose in life. Your spiritual health allows you to have a more profound and meaningful life. As a family, you need to be open, honest, and respectful of your spirituality and of the spirituality of others in the family.

Step 4.

  • Socialization

People need other people. We need to have peers to that we can relate. We need to have friends that we can spend time with. When raising children, we must teach them how to become part of a group. When we put them in sports, we take the teachable moments to explain dedication, consideration for others, and respect for the feelings of others.

Step 5.

Make a calendar as a family. Write each person’s name and their activities in a specific color. Include pickups, to and from events, and note the time these things take. Now, look at the calendar. Is there a specific color that dominates the calendar? Everyone has a clear picture, and everyone should be part of the solution.

Step 6.

Mandatory Family Night

It does not matter when it is. Pick an evening for family time. For example, select Tuesday night from 7 to bedtime. On that day, children do their homework when they get home. Do something as a family. Go for a walk to the park and play with the kids, play board games, order pizza and watch a movie, and work on a puzzle. Whatever you do, do it together.

It is important to break away from routine every once in a while. When there is a special event in your family, buy personalized candy and they will know it was selected just for them. This shows love and support and that each of us wants to feel special.

Step 6.

Be a Partner First

A long time ago, you met someone and fell in love. You chose to spend the rest of your life together. Then your love grew in the form of children. So many times people focus all their time on the children that they ignore their partner. This is what numbs relationships and sometimes kills them. Set an example for your kids that you are a team. Make sure you have at least one date night a month. Let the kids bond with their grandparents. For that one night, you are with the person you love. All your focus is on them.
