Due to the closed environment of a handbag, it is quite easy for it to become a breeding ground for mold if you spill something inside it. Apart from your lining getting wet and probably spoilt, it is highly likely that the fluid will leak to the outer covering of your purse and damage it too. To prevent that from happening, here are some simple tips shared by professionals at www.pursecleaning.ca, on how to clean up any liquid that spills inside your purse.
The first thing you need to do is to empty out your purse. Separate the items that have been affected by the liquid from those that haven’t been affected. Then use a paper towel to wipe out the liquid from the affected items. If the liquid is sticky, use a wet towel to wipe out the liquid. You can even use soapy water.
Then proceed to wipe the inner lining of the purse. You can use paper towels to blot out the liquid, depending on how sticky the fluid is. For instance, if you are just cleaning out water, paper towels are enough but if the viscosity of the fluid is thick, you may first have to scoop it out or pour it out before attempting to clean the lining of the purse.
You can use dishwashing soap and a wet towel to clean the lining of the purse and also the outside. However, if it is a leather bag, clean it according to the instructions given by the manufacturer.
When you have poured liquid on your purse, try and clean it off as soon as you can. This is especially when you have poured something like soda on it, so that it doesn’t end up being sticky. If the liquid has leaked through to the leather or the external part of the bag, consider using saddle soap as to wash it off. Use saddle soap together with a sponge and water to scrub the outside of the bag. If the lather formed is too much, use a piece of cloth to wipe it off. However, if you are cleaning a suede bag, do not use saddle soap.
If you have spilled something alcoholic on it, half fill a bucket with warm water, add a teaspoon of washing liquid in it and a cup of white vinegar and use the water to clean the lining of the bag. This will not only clean the bag but also remove the smell of alcohol in it. Rinse it off with clean water.
Once you have cleaned the inside of the bag, dry it with a clean towel and then pull the lining out of the bag opening and allow it to dry. You can hang it upside down outside. If the weather outside is not good, place it close to a fan, so that it can air dry. Once it has dried, you can put back the lining inside and put back the contents of your purse.
